Bad reaction to colour

Skin Testing Before Hair Colouring

Why is it so important to undergo skin testing before hair colouring?

Skin testing is vitally important prior to having your hair dyed. This is due the potential risks associated with an active ingredient found in most hair dyes, known as ‘PPD’ (paraphenylenediamine).

‘PPD’ has been proven to cause allergic reactions to hypersensitive individuals, causing very uncomfortable symptoms such as blistering of the skininfection and soft tissue swelling (as pictured).

What does it mean to be hypersensitive?

Hypersensitivity can be quite common. It is an over reaction of the immune system to what is known as an ‘invading’ hapten, such asPPDHaptens have the ability to provoke an immune response that brings about such dramatic changes in the body’s tissues (known as an allergic response or allergy).

In extremely severe cases reactions can be life threatening and these allergic responses can develop at any time. The simplest way to avoid such nasty complications is to have a skin test.

Skin testing at The Hair Factory - the safest method.

Here at The Hair Factory we have a DUTY OF CARE to make sure that you are protected in these circumstances! The best way of ensuring that you are allergy free when it comes to hair colouring, is to come into our salon at Redditch 48 hours before the application of hair dye. Here you can have specific skin test done with the product we intend to use. This is without a doubt the safest and most efficient way of detecting any allergies that may cause damage to your skin!

It couldn't be easier with free parking on our door step, a skin test can be completed in just a few minutes. Such a small price to pay to be safe.

Self Skin Testing Kit

If you are unable to make it the salon for a skin test, we can send you a self skin testing kit in the post. It is very easy to do and you must ensure you are wearing your patch test when you turn up to your appointment. If it is not present and you have not had a skin test carried out by The Hair Factory, we will not be able to carry out a colour service and you may be charged. Please contact the salon to request a Self Skin Testing Kit and ensure you allow enough time for it to be delivered by mail.

F.A.Q regarding colouring your hair.

Q: I have been dyeing my hair for many years and have never had an allergic reaction. Why should I have a test now?

A: You can become hypersensitive to new things every day, some people may suffer from allergies all of a sudden, hay fever for example or even latex gloves - you can develop sensitivities at any time in your life.

Q: I am taking medication - will this affect the result?

A: It has been found that medication can indeed vary your reactions to hair dye. Some may suppress any existing hypersensitivity, some may make you hypersensitive.

Q: Why do I have to test 48 hours before the application of hair-dye?

A: In some cases, the most severe version of hypersensitivity is a cell mediated reaction – this can take at least 48 hours to occur.

Skin testing for application of bleach

Each individual has a different sensitivity or tolerance to scalp bleaching. Different factors such as skin type (dry/oily etc), room temperature and temperature of the persons scalp all play a part in how bleach works.

It is completely normal to feel an itching or tingling sensation, even a little heat when bleach is first applied to your scalp so try not to be too alarmed. If you feel any MAJOR discomfort during the bleaching process however, please inform your stylist IMMEDIATELY.

Child Policy at The Hair Factory

Between us all at The Hair Factory we would like to politely make you aware of our child policy. In both the hair and beauty environment children can create two problems for us as stylist and therapists. We would like to share these with you because it’s important you don’t think we are just being nanny McPhees!

1. Babies are unpredictable and youngsters get bored, it’s completely understandable and we expect no less! Some clients in the salon may be in for total relaxation; perhaps they have been given a voucher or even saved up their pennies to treat themselves. If you have ever experienced a facial or massage you’ll know how relaxing they can be, but it’s not so relaxing when there are loud noises coming from another part of the salon.

2. We won’t bore you with red tape procedure and paperwork; needless to say we take health and safety very seriously. With youngsters on the loose our stylists and therapists hearts are often going ten-to-the-dozen keeping an eye on moving children around hot and dangerous implements such as hair straighteners and curling tongs. We want our salon to appeal to as many people as possible and we love to meet your little ones, but this can only be for a maximum of 30 minutes when under the age of 10 years old, we also must request that they are under strict supervision at all times and unfortunately we cannot allow them in treatment rooms.

We hope you understand and if you have any further questions please give our team a call. Thank you.
